I was originally pretty bummed when I saw the lineup for this year's CIFF, although after some though I realized its a pretty decent set of films. Mostly, my bummer was from reading reports from Toronto for the past few weeks, and expecting to see all the same stuff. I want to see Ten and Far From Heaven and Gerry and Vendredi soir and Irreversible! Luckily, I will certainly have the chance to see most if not all of those at a later date, so its no great loss. Anyone wishing to browse the full lineup can do so at the link above, my tentative schedule is listed below, although if I actually see everything listed I will bepretty damn amazed. [more]

I wish I had written about this fantastic piece of work from Howard Hawks closer to the time that I saw it, because I know I had some insightful comments to make and they've been forgotten. I just stumbled across this when I had a couple hours to spare and saw a Hawks film on Turner Classic Movies. My knowledge of Hawks is pretty sparse (The Big Sleep, To Have And Have Not, His Girl Friday) and he's one of those directors I always meant to catch more films by. I should also note that my knowledge of Cary Grant is pretty sparse as well, basically limited to the Hitchcock films. [more]

In the midst of this large update, some brief notes on other things I've seen recently. [more]

Having seen Nakata's Chaos a couple weeks ago, I was sufficiently inspired to seek out some more of his work, and I found a copy of both Ring and Ring 2 on DVD on Ebay. Sweet. [more]

Seeing a movie on a plane is far from an ideal experience, and usually I just take a pass. The films are pan and scan, typically edited for language, and aside from anything else they tend to be terrible. However, these were two movies I had been curious about and planned to catch up with on rental at some point, so I just went for it on my recent trip to Vegas for a trade show. [more]

I will be out of town until next Monday, so it is pretty likely there will be no updates until then. I have no such excuses for the fact that there have been no updates for the last week, other than I haven't been taking the train. However, with lots of plane time upcoming, expect updates galore when I return, in particular on Howard Hawks' wonderful Only Angels Have Wings, and Hideo Nakata's Ring and Ring 2 which I got on DVD and will probably watch while I'm out of town. Watch out Vegas, here I come!

I had never really heard much about Hideo Nakata before, and when this showed up at Facets I went and did some research. Apparently he's really big in Japan for doing horror films, a couple of which are slated for big Hollywood remakes here. This film, while not perfect, was pretty good and technically wonderful, filled with great shots and cinematography.

I really wanted Bethany to see One, Two, Three so I went searching for the letterboxed laser but came up empty. Thankfully someone volunteered to tape theirs for me, so thanks Dave! I just couldn't imagine seeing this in pan and scan.

I keep waiting for the movie which is going to blow me away this year, the one that will hit me in the gut and leave me with my mouth hanging open. 2001 had Donnie Darko, 2000 had George Washington (leave aside for the moment the fact that I only saw both these movies this year.) Last weekend I saw these two releases, and I'm still waiting.
